In high school I was crazy about a girl who was crazy about Prince. Of course she loved to sing all the inappropriate lyrics of his early stuff, which wasn’t the type of thing a 17 year old boy needed to hear with such a heavy crush on her. We were only ever friends and so goes the story of the many loves of Dobie Gillis.
I love Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, and so many other hits by Prince. But my favorite album was Sign’o the Times. Mostly for its social commentary and songs that had a hymn like sound to them. I used to listen to both sides of that cassette so many times. My car cassette auto switched sides when playing. High technology then. I used to listen to it on third shift when I was a stocker in a grocery store and it was one of the few albums that gave me street creed with my coworkers.
I saw Prince about eight or nine years ago on his Greatest Hits tour. Such a great performer. My wife and I were really far away from the stage, but it was such a great show. I have a lot of his albums.
Funny story, back when vinyl was cool but fading the first time around I spent two months in L.A. learning how to work in a recording studio and a friend of mine told me he wanted a copy of Prince’s Black album. I had heard about it in Rolling Stone magazine so I knew about it. It was an album Warner Brothers didn’t seem to want him to release but supposedly copies leaked out. I found a copy in a record shop for $12. It was purple vinyl and the front cover of the album was black on black picture of Prince wearing a feather boa I listened to it a couple of times. Carried it back home and the friend who wanted it offered me $75 for it. Who was I to haggle him down. He offered that amount with out discussion so I took it. I always wondered if it really was the album it looked and sounded like Prince Years later he finally released it and it was indeed the same album. I bought it just to see. Interesting but not one of his best albums
Prince, I hope you are making music with the Lord. We have lost such an eclectic and awesome artist.
